A surprising number of ships either stay overnight in San Juan or leave late enough that passengers have an evening in the city. Most people spend it within a few blocks of the piers. The locals, meanwhile, are a 10-minute ride away in Santurce, and if you want one evening that feels like Puerto Rico rather than a cruise port, that is where to go.
What La Placita is
La Placita de Santurce is a small covered produce market, the Plaza del Mercado, that dates to the early 1900s and still sells fruit, vegetables and coffee to the neighborhood in the daytime. The blocks of bars and restaurants that grew up around it are the reason visitors know the name. From Thursday through Saturday evenings the streets around the market close to cars and fill with people, music spills out of every doorway, and the whole block becomes an open-air party that runs late.
It is not a tourist strip. You will hear salsa from one bar and reggaeton from the next, see people dancing in the street, and find everything from counter-service fritters to serious restaurants within a two-block radius. Dress is casual, the crowd is all ages earlier in the evening and younger as the night goes on.
Santurce beyond the market
Santurce is also the city’s street-art district. The blocks around Calle Cerra, a short walk from La Placita, are covered in large murals by Puerto Rican and international artists, repainted regularly, and worth a daylight wander before the market comes alive. The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the island’s main art museum, is in the same neighborhood.
Getting there and back
From the cruise piers La Placita is about 3 miles east, a 10 to 20 minute taxi or rideshare depending on traffic. Rideshare is the easy answer both directions; there is a taxi stand near the market on busy nights but it can have a line. Plan to be heading back well before your ship’s all-aboard, since the streets around the market are closed and your driver will have to meet you a block or two out.
If you are not staying overnight
On a normal daytime port call, La Placita is quiet: a working market and a few lunch counters. It is still a pleasant stop paired with the murals and the art museum, but the evening is the show.
