Five days is where Puerto Rico stops being a region and starts being an island. Three days after a cruise gets you the east coast properly. Five gets you the east and somewhere genuinely different — the west coast, the southern mountains, or an offshore island — without a single rushed morning.
The short answer
Rent a car at the airport on disembarkation day. Use two bases, not five: two or three nights on the east coast, then two on the west coast or an offshore island. Sleep near SJU on the final night if you have an early flight. Book the bio bay for the darkest night of your trip.
What the fourth and fifth days actually buy you
The first three post-cruise days are largely spoken for: rainforest, beach, bioluminescent bay, and the recovery time you need after a week on a ship. That is a complete trip, and it is the one we recommend most often in three days after a San Juan cruise.
Days four and five change the category. They are long enough to cross the island, which means the west coast’s sunsets and surf towns, the dry southern coast, the coffee country in the cordillera, or a proper two-night stay on Vieques or Culebra. Any one of those makes the trip feel like Puerto Rico rather than like an extension of San Juan.
The two-base rule
Five nights, two hotels. Three at most.
Packing, checking out, driving and checking in eats roughly three hours every time you move. Do it five times and you have spent most of a day in car parks. Pick two bases at opposite ends of what you want to see and day-trip from each.
Plan A: east coast, then an offshore island
The best all-round five-day shape, and the one that uses the post-cruise freedom most effectively — because an island is precisely what you could never risk before a sailing.

Ferry sailings from Ceiba are limited and can sell out or be affected by weather, so book as far ahead as the system allows and never plan to catch the last boat of the day. Practicalities are in the Vieques and Culebra guide and under getting to Vieques and Culebra.
Plan B: the coast-to-coast arc, east then west
No boats, no reservations beyond the rainforest, and the most varied scenery. This is the plan for people who like driving.

Day three and day five are both long drives. If that does not appeal, cut the west out and give the extra time to the east coast instead.
Plan C: the south and the mountains
The least-visited version, and the one repeat visitors tend to love. Route 52 climbs through the cordillera to the Caribbean coast, and the landscape flips from rainforest green to dry southern scrub in under two hours.
Two nights on the east coast for the rainforest and the bio bay, then two nights around Ponce or the dry-forest coast to the west of it, with a mountain day for coffee haciendas on the way back north. Fifth night near San Juan. See the south and the central mountains.
Do you need a car?
For Plans B and C, absolutely, and for the mainland half of Plan A. Nothing in this itinerary is usefully connected by public transport, and taxi fares between regions would exceed a week’s hire in two days.

The last night matters more than you think
Do not spend night five three hours from the airport. Whatever the plan, end within easy reach of SJU — the metro area, Isla Verde, or the north coast — so the final morning is a short drive and a car return rather than a cross-island sprint.

What five days still will not do
Five days does not let you circle the whole island and stop properly. You will have to choose between the west coast and an offshore island, and between the mountains and the north coast. If you want all of it, you want seven — see the seven-day road trip.
Frequently asked questions
Is five days enough for Puerto Rico?
Enough for two contrasting regions done properly, which is a genuinely satisfying trip. Not enough to see the whole island without rushing. Five is the point where most people stop feeling they compromised.
Should I add five days before or after the cruise?
After. Ferries, night tours and long drives are all fine when there is no ship to catch, and all risky before one. If you must split, take one night before and four after.
Can I fit both Vieques and Culebra into five days?
Technically, badly. Inter-island travel is awkward and you would spend the trip in transit. Pick one — Culebra for the single most famous beach, Vieques for the bio bay and a wilder feel.
How many hotels should I book for five nights?
Two, or three at the absolute most. Every move costs roughly half a day once you count packing, checkout, driving and check-in.
Is the west coast worth the drive?
If you like surf towns, sunsets and a slower pace, yes. If you mainly want rainforest, calm swimming beaches and glowing water, stay east and add days there instead.
When should I book the bioluminescent bay?
On the darkest night of your stay. Bioluminescence is far more impressive around the new moon than the full moon, and with five nights you have the flexibility to choose.
