Brilliance of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean’s Radiance-class ships, and at around 2,100 guests at double occupancy (about 2,500 max) she’s noticeably smaller and easier to move on and off than the Oasis or Icon-class megas. She runs Southern Caribbean itineraries that include San Juan regularly, and her smaller size is genuinely an advantage on port days here. Here’s the honest port-day guide for Brilliance guests.

Where Brilliance docks in San Juan

Brilliance, being smaller than the Oasis or Icon class, typically docks at the Old San Juan piers (Pier 3 or Pier 4), where you walk out the gangway, cross Calle Marina, and you’re in the historic district. This is the better dock — no taxi math, just shoes and a hat and you’re in El Viejo San Juan in 10 minutes.

The Radiance-class advantage on a port day

Disembarking 2,100 guests is dramatically faster than disembarking 5,000-7,000. You’re not waiting in a 45-minute gangway line. You’re not fighting for a taxi. You can be off the ship at 8:15 a.m. for an 8:00 a.m. arrival and have your day going by 8:30. On a Brilliance day in San Juan, the ship’s own pace gives you back time the megas don’t.

Realistic port-day options

Brilliance San Juan stops are typically 9 to 10 hours, which puts a lot of the island within reach.

Solid fit: El Yunque half-day, Old San Juan walking and food tours, the forts, Bacardí or Ron del Barrilito, catamaran or private sailing charter.

Doable with a good operator: Culebra and Flamenco Beach (early-morning ferry), Río Camuy Caves, Arecibo Observatory, Ponce.

Stretch: Rincón or Cabo Rojo — only if your specific itinerary has an extra-long port day (verify before booking).

What to know about all-aboard

Royal Caribbean’s all-aboard is typically 30 minutes before sail. On a 5 p.m. departure, that’s 4:30 p.m. at the gangway. From the Old San Juan piers, the walk back from the historic district is 10 to 15 minutes, so leave by 4:10. From farther out (El Yunque, Culebra), build in real buffer — Royal does not wait.

Eating on a Brilliance day

Don’t waste a Brilliance day on a windjammer lunch. Old San Juan has the best food in the southern Caribbean port rotation. Mofongo, lechón, fresh-caught fish, alcapurrias from a street vendor — it’s all five to ten minutes from the gangway.
