If your Caribbean itinerary aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas includes a San Juan port stop, you’re getting one of the easier port days in the Caribbean — Old San Juan is fully walkable from the cruise piers and one of the most genuinely interesting cities you’ll visit on the whole sailing. This guide covers what to expect specifically on an Icon of the Seas San Juan day: where the ship typically docks, how to plan around the all-aboard time, and which shore options fit the typical Icon itinerary window.

The ship in San Juan

Icon of the Seas is among the largest cruise ships ever built and one of the larger ships that calls in San Juan when itineraries include it. Because of her size, she typically docks at one of the larger piers — Pier 3 or Pier 4 in the main Old San Juan pier complex — though pier assignments can change with little notice. Confirm your specific assignment with your cruise documents or the ship’s daily program the night before.

From any of the main Old San Juan piers (1, 3, 4, or 6), you’re a 10-minute walk from the heart of the old city. Pier 6 and the Pan American Pier on the other side of the bay are exceptions — see our San Juan Cruise Piers Guide for details on what each pier means for walkability.

Typical Icon of the Seas itineraries that include San Juan

Royal Caribbean has run various Icon itineraries with San Juan calls, generally as part of 7-night Eastern or Southern Caribbean loops out of Miami or Port Canaveral. Typical in-port window is 8–10 hours, often arriving mid-morning and departing late afternoon or early evening. Always confirm exact arrival and all-aboard times with your specific sailing documents — itineraries do shift.

What fits your day

For a standard 8–10 hour Icon port day, the realistic shore options are:

  • Old San Juan walking tour + El Morro — the classic and best-fit option. 4–5 hours, ends at the pier.
  • Casa Bacardí distillery tour — ferry-accessible, 4–5 hours round trip including the tour itself. Pairs well with a short Old San Juan walk afterward.
  • El Yunque half-day tour — 5–6 hours; fits an 8+ hour port day.
  • San Juan food tour — 3 hours; pairs well with a fort visit.
  • Beach day at Condado or Isla Verde — Uber 10–15 minutes from the pier. Flexible timing.
  • Old San Juan mixology class — 90 minutes; perfect for short windows or rainy weather.

Avoid these on an Icon port day:

  • Culebra or Flamenco Beach (too far, ferry uncertainty)
  • Mosquito Bay on Vieques (after-dark, can’t return in time)
  • Toro Verde ziplines unless your port day exceeds 9 hours and you book the included-transport tour

The all-aboard rule with Icon

All-aboard time on Icon is typically 30 minutes before stated departure. The ship doesn’t wait for independent excursion guests. If you’re booking outside Royal Caribbean’s shore excursion desk, build a 90-minute buffer between your tour’s stated return time and the all-aboard. Two specific risks on a San Juan day:

  • Traffic into Old San Juan can back up significantly in the late afternoon, especially Friday and Sunday afternoons.
  • The ferry from Cataño back to Old San Juan after a Casa Bacardí tour can run with delays. Build buffer.

Disembarkation efficiency

Icon’s size means there can be a wait at the gangway during peak disembarkation. If you have a tight tour pickup or you’re independent and want to maximize port-day time, go early — typically the first 30–45 minutes after the gangway opens is much faster than the next 90.

Bringing things back aboard

Royal Caribbean holds alcohol purchased ashore until disembarkation day. This is standard. Food brought aboard for snacking is typically allowed in reasonable quantities — sealed packaged items are safer than open prepared food. Rum and craft items from local shops are popular souvenirs and are not a problem to bring aboard (just expect to drink them later).
