How to read this table
- Likely Pier — “Old San Juan piers (1, 3, 4)” means walking distance to the historic district. “Pan American Pier” is across the bay in the Isla Grande area; you will need a taxi or the free trolley. “Old San Juan or Pan American” means assignments vary by sailing.
- Walkable to Old San Juan — “Yes” means you can step off the ship and walk into the historic district in roughly 5–10 minutes. “No” means a 10–15 minute taxi or trolley ride. “Sometimes” means it depends on which pier you draw.
- Best 4-Hour Plan — a condensed version of the recommended plan for short port days. The full version is on each individual ship guide.
- Best 8-Hour Plan — a condensed version of the recommended plan for full port days, including a buffer before all-aboard.
Methodology and limits
Pier assignments are based on observed patterns from 2024–2026 cruise schedules and reader reports. They are not contractual. Cruise lines reassign piers regularly for operational reasons, weather, and traffic from other ships in port. The walkability rating reflects the typical pier each ship is assigned, not every possible assignment. Plan recommendations are written for first-time visitors with average mobility; passengers with limited mobility should also read our Old San Juan accessibility guide.

Cruise Ship Piers at San Juan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which pier my ship will use?
Pier assignments are made by the cruise line and Puerto Rico Ports Authority and can shift voyage by voyage. Check your daily ship newsletter the night before, or call your cruise line’s shore-side number 24–48 hours before arrival. The patterns in our table are reliable for planning but should be confirmed before your port day.
Which San Juan piers are walkable to Old San Juan?
Piers 1, 3, and 4 are directly walkable to the historic district — 5 to 10 minutes on foot from your gangway to Plaza Colón. The Pan American Pier on Isla Grande is not walkable; you’ll need a taxi, Uber, or the cruise-line shuttle to reach Old San Juan (10–15 minutes by car, around $12–18 each way).
Why do mega-ships use the Pan American Pier instead of Old San Juan?
The Pan American Pier was built specifically to handle large cruise vessels that don’t fit at the historic Old San Juan piers. Carnival Celebration, Carnival Magic, Carnival Vista, MSC World America, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Destiny typically dock there. The trade-off is more terminal capacity but less direct access to Old San Juan.
Can my pier change after I’ve already disembarked?
No — once your ship is docked, that’s where it stays for the day. But pier assignments can change between when you booked and when you sail, especially if multiple ships are in port at the same time. Always verify on the morning of your call.
How early should I leave Old San Juan to get back to the Pan American Pier?
Plan to leave Old San Juan at least 75–90 minutes before your all-aboard time. Traffic across the Caño Martín Peña bridge can back up significantly during late-afternoon port departures, especially on Saturdays. Taxis sometimes wait 15–20 minutes at the stand during peak hours.
Is there a shuttle between the Pan American Pier and Old San Juan?
Some cruise lines run a paid shuttle (around $15–25 round-trip). Taxis are abundant and typically cheaper for groups of 3+. Uber and Lyft both serve the Pan American Pier reliably. The free Old San Juan trolley does not run to the Pan American Pier.
Will I have time for both forts on a 4-hour port day from the Pan American Pier?
It’s tight but possible if you taxi straight to El Morro at arrival, walk down through Old San Juan to San Cristóbal, and taxi back. Most cruisers prefer one fort plus Calle Fortaleza and a meal. Pick El Morro for views; pick San Cristóbal for tunnels and military history.
How accurate is the table for my specific sailing?
The table reflects historical pier patterns for each ship class — what they’ve done most often over the past 12–18 months. It’s a planning tool, not a guarantee. Your cruise line’s confirmation document and the ship’s daily program are the only authoritative sources for your specific call.
